The April General Meeting is on April 15th at Sheridan Center 680 Lebo Blvd, Bremerton. Doors open at 6:30pm, meeting begins at 7:00pm.

Agenda items include:

  • Manchester Elementary STEAM night (5/8)
  • Salmon in the Classroom
  • Winter blackmouth derby
  • Washington State Youth Conservation Camp
  • May presentation: Tom Coleman on the relationship between beavers and salmon habitat
  • Kitsap County Fair booth
  • Kitsap Water Festival
  • Kid’s Fishing Party
  • Summer Salmon Derby

Manchester Elementary STEAM night:We’ve had such a good time at Olalla and Sidney Glen Elementary schools recent STEAM nights that we are headed to Manchester Elementary STEAM night on 5/8. If you would like to attend, contact Jerry Tomeo at 360.509.9404

Salmon in the Classroom:During early April students from five schools visited Otto Jarstad Park to release their salmon. The schools were:
  • South Colby Elementary
  • Manchester Elementary
  • Burley Glenwood Elementary
  • Sunnyslope Elementary
  • South Kitsap High School
The Poggie Club helped with five activities for the students during the salmon release days including:
  • Fish Autopsy
  • Fish feeding and fin clipping
  • Stream scent game
  • Manchester / Port Orchard library presentation and fish release
  • Salmon Limbo

We are happy to report that we are looking at two additional schools to add for next year.

Thank you to all of the volunteers who made the Salmon in the Classroom program so successful!

Winter Blackmouth Derby:It was wonderful to see several Poggies out for a beautiful day on the water for the Winter Blackmouth Derby on Saturday April 5th. Three fish were weighed in with the largest being a 5.75lb Blackmouth by Griffin Fujioka. The fish was caught near Richmond Beach on a red label herring in an anchovy helmet.

Washington State Youth Conservation Camp:We are sponsoring 4 scholarships for the summer Washington State Youth Conservation camp. If you have a youth who would be interested in the experience, contact Ron Kirkland at 360.373.2088.

The dates for the conservation camp are:

  • Boys camp: July 20-26th
  • Girls camp: July 27-August 2nd

May presentation: Tom Coleman facilitates a group sharing a common interest in the Little Anderson Creek Watershed in Seabeck. Tom is planning to bring some friends and give a presentation on the relationship between beavers and salmon habitat.

Kitsap County Fair booth:We are hosting a booth at the Kitsap County Fair which is scheduled for August 20th-24th, 2025. This is a great opportunity to recruit members and gain exposure in the community. Our booth will be indoors and we will need several volunteers to work the booth during the fair.

Kitsap Water Festival:Ron Kirkland volunteered to lead our group at the Kitsap Water Festival on 5/13/2025. We will need volunteers to work the booth and engage with the community. More information here: https://www.kitsap.gov/pw/pages/edwaterfest.aspx

Kid’s Fishing Party:The2025 Kid’s Fishing Party is just weeks away on April 26th at Otto Jarstad Park. We will need lots of help and if you would like to be involved, please sign up at a general meeting or e-mail kitsappoggieclub@gmail.com or just show up! Volunteer opportunities include:
  • 4/19 @ 08:00: Install raceway barriers at Otto Jarstad Park
  • 4/24 @ 08:00: Fish arrival day at Otto Jarstad Park, staging of Poggie trailer and canopies
  • 4/26 @ 08:00: Kid’s Fishing Party
  • 4/27 @ 08:00: Clean at Otto Jarstad Park
  • TBD: Work party to clean gear, trailer, etc.
Board Met:April 8th 7PM at Art Bruner Residence. Next board meeting is March 9th.

Dues: Please make sure you are caught up on your 2025 annual dues. Dues serve the community through camp scholarships, salmon in the classroom, Kid’s fishing party, etc. You can pay on the web at https://kitsappoggieclub.com/about/membership-application/, you can pay by mail, you can pay at a meeting. 

Don’t forget to invite your friends and family to our events and recruit them to join!

  • Kid’s Fishing Party volunteers (see above, 4/19 – 4/27)
  • STEAM night at Manchester Elementary School volunteers (5/8)
  • Kitsap Water Festival volunteers (5/13)
  • Kitsap County Fair booth volunteers (8/20-24)
  • Summer Auction and Salmon Derby prizes and donations. We are always open for sponsors and donations. If you or someone you know can offer experience or destination based donations like a one night stay at a hotel casino, or a guided trip, etc., then please consider donating to the Kitsap Poggie Club as this can be a great fundraiser during the summer picnic.
