2026 Winter Blackmouth Derby

The 2026 Winter Blackmouth Derby is on April 4th, 2026. Note that this is a members-only event. Contact Randy Fox at 360-519-9941 or hawaiifoxs@yahoo.com for questions and ticket purchases.

Time: sunrise – 2 pm
Weigh-in: Port of Brownsville boat launch 
Rules:

  1. Fishing is permitted from BOATS ONLY & EACH OCCUPANT OF THE BOAT MUST HAVE A VALID DERBY TICKET
  2. All fish entered must have been caught during open hours of the 2026 Kitsap Poggie Club Winter Blackmouth Derby (sunrise – 2pm) on April 4th, 2026 in accordance with WDFW regulations Marine Area 10.
  3. Derby Tickets are not transferable & shall not be altered.
  4. All ticket sales are final. In the event of a WDFW closure, tickets will be refunded.
  5. Official time is sunrise to 2pm on April 4th, 2026.
  6. Only legal salmon per WDFW regulations may be entered in the derby.
  7. The official clock will be kept at the weigh-in line station and will be open at 9am and will close at 2pm. Fish must be weighed or contestant must be in line to weigh-in at 2pm the day of the event.
  8. Only one entry per contestant is allowed. Should a contestant enter more than one salmon the heaviest will be the official entry.
  9. The derby committee will examine and mark any salmon entered. The derby committee reserves the right to clean the salmon for verification.
  10. Prizes will be awarded by weight of salmon; a tie will be broken by the nearest gram of weight.
  11. Prizes will be awarded at 2pm at Brownsville Marine at the day of the event. The award ceremony will occur at the lawn to the west of the boat ramp. In no case will one contestant be awarded more than one prize.
  12. All prizes will be awarded by order of standing on the fish ladder. If the prize isn’t accepted the night of the Awards Ceremony, it will be forfeited and returned to the prize pool.
  13. The Derby Committee shall settle all disputes regarding the rules of the derby and the awarding of prizes. All Derby Committee decisions shall be final.
  14. Contestants enter the derby at their own risk and will hold no one affiliated with or in the Kitsap Poggie Club, or Brownsville Marine, responsible for any injuries or accidents incurred while participating.
  15. Anyone not abiding to the derby rules will be disqualified from the derby and WDFW will be notified if necessary.

Where to fish:
Since most boats will be leaving from Port of Brownsville, some popular places to fish will be: 

  • Jeff Head
  • Appletree Cove
  • Edmonds Oil Docks
  • Richmond Beach
  • Manchester

What to use:

Most anglers will be trolling with downriggers for this fishery. Last year’s winner came on a red label herring in a helmet behind a flasher. Other popular techniques include hoochies, spoons and plugs. 

Mooching is another popular way to target these winter blackmouth.
