A small group traveled to Palapas Ventana on the Sea of Cortez in Baja Mexico for the first time in 2 years to enjoy some sun and fun and good fishing. We fished hard for all 4 days in spite of a power outage and some rain due to Hurricane Pamela skirting Cabo San Lucas 250 miles to the south. This year there were Dorado caught every day, typically in the 8-15 lb range. Bait was plentiful and big. We caught lots of 8-12 lb Roosterfish (my boat released 10+ of them on Friday alone!!) which are an absolute blast to catch. While fishing in shallow for Roosterfish, we also caught Cabrilla (bass), Pargo (snapper) and some other assorted tasty treats that often ended up as ceviche appetizers before dinner.
The big winner in our Derby was Ty Hatler with a 14.6 lb Dorado. This fish took the “Largest Dorado” and “Largest Fish” awards this year. Congratulations Ty!! Our derby in Baja is a fundraiser to help fund some Mexican students so they can continue their education. We managed to raise $865 toward this cause while we were there–way to go traveling Poggies!!
Another highlight of the trip was a ride on the locally world-famous Palapas Ventana Hot Dog Train. We had a great time eating crazy Baja Hot Dogs and cruising around the town on the hilarious train. The food was incredible and the staff at Palapas Ventana are the friendliest anywhere. It sure was nice to get back down there after 2 years. Everyone started looking at your calendars for next year… Let’s go in October 2022!!!
